Cape Town side Chippa United have got lofty ambitions in the Nedbank Cup this season and have enough experience in their squad to certainly cause a surprise or two.
The Western Cape Vodacom League team play their home games at the Phillipi Stadium and are based in the neighbouring township of Nyanga.
The side has shown a remarkable turnaround in fortunes since being purchased by businessman Chippa Mpengesi in early 2010. At that stage the club was wallowing at the foot of the Vodacom League table and looked dead certainties for relegation.
However, Mpengesi invested in his playing staff, and not only did they beat the drop at the end of last season, they are now favourites to finish top of the Western Cape division this campaign.
The squad is coached by experienced local tactician Mike Lukhubeni and has several recognisable names in its line-up.
Andile Mbenyane (ex-Ajax Cape Town), Welcome Qalanto and Diego Brown (both Maritzburg United) and Abduraghmaan White (BidVest Wits) are three of the more well-known players currently at the club.
Masonwabe Maseti (ex-Ajax Cape Town and Free State Stars), Ntsikelelo Phama (Vasco da Gama), Simphiwe Pama (Ajax Cape Town) and Mandla Nxumalo (Jomo Cosmos, Nathi Lions and Bush Bucks) have also been on the club's books.
“Playing in the Nedbank Cup is important for us because it allows us to measure our progress, as well as expose the brand to the public and hopefully corporate sponsors,” coach Lukhubeni says.
